Look Up, Our You Will Fall On Your Butt

Falling Down
"Keep looking up...that's the secret of life." - Snoopy
I like to exercise first thing in the morning. I watch YouTube for workout videos. I was going through an exercise routine when something the instructor stated really resonated with me. I have watched this video several dozen times, but this time what the instructors comment really stood. At the beginning of the routine I was doing some squats with barbells in hand. It is easy to lose your balance if you care not careful. The instructor stated, "keep staring out and that will keep you upright." And it is so true. When I start looking at what I am doing, I lose my balance and start swaying from side to side. However, if I pick a point out in front of me and look forward then I keep my balance and perform the exercise much easier.

Where we look is not just important in exercise. It is important in the adventure of life as well. It is so easy to become focused on where our feet are right now. We get so focused and start looking down because of:

The great things happening.
The promotion we received.
The difficult things happening.
A failure.
A strong emotional response to an event
Seeking recognition.
Finishing a major project successfully.
Overwhelm.
The loss of a loved one.
A fight with a significant other.

There are so many reasons we stop looking forward. These are just a few examples. The urgency of life causes us to lose track of where we are going and causes us to look down and lose our balance. We find ourselves teetering from side to side, trying to keep from falling over. Unfortunately, if we continue to look down, there is a good chance we will fall over and land flat on our face or backside.

If you pause and think about what you are currently focused on, what comes to mind? What causes you to look down?

Looking up and looking forward is what life is truly about. We are meant to pursue greatness. We are meant to live with purpose. We are meant to live with passion. Unfortunately, these words have been poisoned and come to mean being the next Jeff Bezos or a certain dollar amount in a checking account or a big car or a big house.

This is not what these words mean. The definition of greatness, purpose and passion likely mean something different for you than it does for me. And that is okay.

The point is that we are meant look up and look forward so that we continue to grow and develop and become who we are meant to be. Look up so that we can see where we are going and the next steps to get there. Life gives us a glimpse of where we are headed, the top of the mountain. However, when it comes to the path to the top of the mountain, life usually only gives us the next few steps to get there. We have to take those few steps. Then the next steps appear. If we stop looking up we will lose sight of the path and found ourselves lost.

What is holding you back from looking up?
What has you hovering on the brink of falling over?
What are you so focused on right now that you cannot see your future?

If you feel you are looking forward, that is great. Do have a clear vision of where you are going? If you do not, that is okay! Do you see far enough in front of you that you know the next steps to take? If you do, then move forward! Take those steps.

It is so easy to look down. Life comes at us fast and it can be overwhelming. We lose sight of where we are going because we are busy reacting to what life throws at us. Take some time and look up and see where you are going. Write down where you are going and the next two steps you want to take to get there. As you take those steps, the path will become clearer. Before you know it, you will reach that mountain top.
